Joel began teaching himself to play the keyboard at age eight, the drum kit at age eleven, and began composing his own songs at fifteen. He started playing his original music with other musicians at seventeen; it was then that he began to experiment with other instruments as well as with recording. He has continued composing songs, both in collaboration with others as well as on his own and already has a prolific collection of original work in many different genres of music. He first taught music at age twenty, at the First Church of the Nazarene in El Paso, training middle and high school students on the drum kit and piano. It was during this time that he began to increasingly recognize the power of music and art to make a positive difference in the lives of children. His most recent collaboration with other musicians has been with local band, Radio La Chusma, as the keyboardist, performing and working full time on their most recent album. He started working as a keyboardist for Kids Excel in 2006 and is excited to be a part of a team that is promoting the advancement of the arts for kids in his beloved border community!
