This year Kids Excel El Paso is all about TRASH, focusing on our Planet and the need for all of us to participate in “The 3 R’s - Reduce, Reuse & Recycle. “ Our instructors teach lessons that cover the basics about landfills, the 3 R’s and why we should participate in this initiative at home and at school.

Children will be challenged with different ways they can use less of everything, how different items can be re-used in different ways, and the specifics of El Paso's Recycling requirements, using their "Drop It In The Blue" promotional campaign, as well as pointing out the differences between biodegradable and non-biodegradable trash items.

In addition, since El Paso currently has no glass recycling program, KEEP is organizing a letter-writing campaign to city council representatives petitioning to sponsor the creation of a glass-recycling facility here in El Paso, culminating in a special appearrance by three of El Paso's City Councilmen during our gala event at the Plaza Theatre.

The average American produces 4 pounds of trash a day. Americans produce the most garbage with 220 million tons of garbage each year from the United States alone! That’s A LOT of trash…so where does it all go? After garbage trucks pick up all of our trash from the cans we put on the street, where do they take it? Landfills!   Nearly half of all U.S. landfills are full or they have been closed because the water near the landfill might become unfit to drink. The more land we use for landfills, the less we have for all living things! Landfills are a necessary part of life so we have to start thinking about what really needs to go in our trash.
