Teaching Excellence Through the Arts

Kids Excel’s Outreach program is serving over 2200 children in twenty-six schools in 2010-2011 with our fast-paced weekly dance classes. In each participating school, KEEP classes are mandatory for the entire 4th grade. Classroom teacher participation and support are required, and our more energetic and involved teachers even get up and dance with their students! Children have one weekly dance class during the school day, putting the arts on equal footing with their academic learning. All classes are taught by highly trained teaching artists—Dance Instructor, Assistant, and Musician—and in KEEP-style, are fun, energetic, inclusive, success-oriented, and physically and mentally demanding.

KEEP’s 2010-2011 curriculum is Reduce, Reuse, Recycle (RRR), with a focus on our planet and the responsibility we share to conserve our natural resources. Weekly lessons include demonstrations, challenges, facts and activities to help students use their bodies and minds to interpret environmental concepts and stimulate interest in conservation. In the KEEP classroom, students are learning about ways to reduce the amount of trash they make, how to reuse items, the importance of recycling, the science behind saving our trees, environmental vocabulary words, and mathematical equations to determine how many pounds of trash one person/family/school/city makes in a day and year.

To underscore its curriculum theme, KEEP will host its end-of-year show, “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle—Saving the Planet One Dance Step at a Time”, held in May at each school. Performances feature an opening dance for 60-120 dancers, individual class dances and a grand finale. End-of-year performances also include props, simple costumes, sets, and music by the Kids Excel Band. This year, KEEP will also present a gala performance featuring the entire 4th grade classes from 5 schools at the historic Plaza Theatre on May 12, 2011.

The classes, assemblies, and performances are powerful approaches to learning determination, discipline, excellence and teamwork through dance and gaining positive attention from peers, parents, and community members.
